Support KALW

Our spring 2019 on-air membership drive is over, but we will count all donations before midnight on Wednesday, May 22, to our May campaign. Please consider a sustaining membership. We are able to keep on-air drives to a minimum because of these recurring donations. Also, if you are a sustainer, please consider EFT (electronic bank transfer) -- this kind of transaction means that no credit card fee is assessed and your whole donation goes to KALW! Folk Music & Beyond: Joni 75

Available for a $756/month donation.

Featured on Folk Music & Beyond with JoAnn Mar. w musicians have had as lasting an impact on music as Joni Mitchell. In her four-decade career, she made groundbreaking music that traversed genres and continually stunned fans and critics alike. The music icon celebrated her 75th birthday in style last November, as Jörn Weisbrodt and The Music Center in Los Angeles hosted a pair of star-studded Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration concerts in her honor. The line-up (which Joni helped select) featured many of her closest friends and dearest collaborators, including Graham Nash, Seal, Chaka Khan, Kris Kristofferson, and James Taylor. Also on the bill were Diana Krall, Brandi Carlile, Rufus Wainwright, Emmylou Harris, Glen Hansard, Norah Jones, and Los Lobos with La Marisoul, Cesar Castro & Xochi Flores. Featuring a set of Joni classics and deep cuts from across her career, each night was a thrilling tribute full of excellent music. November 7 was even more magnificent, as Mitchell herself attended and even appeared onstage to blow out birthday candles and sing along as the all-star band and more than 3,000 fans sang "Happy Birthday" and "Big Yellow Taxi" in tribute to her.

Folk Music & Beyond: Songs of our Native Daughters

Available for a $756/month donation.

Featured on Folk Music & Beyond with JoAnn Mar. Songs of Our Native Daughters' gathers together kindred musicians Rhiannon Giddens, Amythyst Kiah, Leyla McCalla, and Allison Russell in song and sisterhood to communicate with their forebears. Drawing on and reclaiming early minstrelsy and banjo music, these musicians reclaim, recast, and spotlight the often unheard and untold history of their ancestors, whose stories remain vital and alive today. The material on 'Songs of Our Native Daughters' -- written and sung in various combinations -- is inspired by New World slave narratives, discrimination and how it has shaped our American experience, as well as musicians such as Haitian troubadour Althiery Dorval and Mississippi Hill Country string player Sid Hemphill, and more.

Thistle & Shamrock: Liz Carroll & Jake Charron's Half Day Road

Available for a $756/month donation.

Featured on Thistle & Shamrock. The lively staccato of the title Half Day Road verbally parallels the energy and drive that Liz Carroll and Jake Charron bring musically to their first full-length collaborative album. Rooted firmly in the Irish traditional style, composed and interpreted by two uniquely North American artists, Half Day Road is more than just superb tunes and top-notch musicianship; it’s an exercise in how to progress along the continuum of Irish musical tradition, and how to work as contemporary artists within a traditional form. The blast of new music contained within the album rises to meet this challenge, creatively carrying Irish trad music to new destinations. Carroll and Charron open the album with verve and vigor, tearing into the title track at a brazen clip. Shifting gears through the different tracks, the album winds its way with finesse through melodies that range from bright to lush to bittersweet. Beneath Charron’s rhythmic foundation of guitar and piano lies a shimmering bedrock of sound that grounds the album and allows Carroll’s fiddle notes to soar. The album is comprised entirely of original compositions. Charron contributes a sweetly poignant solo piano track. In the remaining tracks, Carroll showcases her virtuosity and range as a composer. Using Irish reels, airs, and jigs as the bones of her compositions, she finds in their framework a source of infinite variation. The album also welcomes fellow musical travelers Chico Huff (bass), Joanie Madden (tin whistle), and John Anthony (percussion). Half Day Road speaks to the enduring power of Irish traditional music — in composition, in play, and moving forward.
